While My Wife Went To A War ... -- May 14-15, 2011

Okay ... so, as you should know by reading other parts of my "bio", my wife and I are in the SCA. Right now, she's the Exchequer for the Principality we are in. There is a big war this weekend between two Principalities (large groups). She has to be there, because our Principality is hosting the event, and she handles the finances to make sure everything is recorded properly, etc. Fun. (Well, she likes it, I'm bored ...).

I don't have anything to do at these wars because I don't fight. So ... instead, this weekend, our friend Don Gerth, who is retired as a bridge painter for CalTrans is coming over to help with a bathroom "remodel". He's going to paint the upstairs bathroom(s), and all of that. I have dropped CJ off with friends who are taking her to the event.

Below are "before" and "after" photos. Should be a weird day. These rooms are "one-butt" rooms, meaning that I can't help Don much, because there isn't room in there ... but that's how it goes. They're also small, so he won't need much, if any, help ...

A little while after we moved into the house (about 7 years ago), CJ and her sister Gail went out and bought paint, and this shelf unit (see box below) ... and they haven't been used. Today, we are fixing that. When Carolyn comes home this evening, it should be all done. The only thing I don't think we'll get done is that I also want to replace the lights over the sinks/cabinets ... maybe in a few weeks or something ... we'll see.

About a year (maybe less?) after we moved in, we did have a handy-man come in and install new sink/cabinet units, which are the ones shown, and the cabinets over the sinks replace these huge mirrors with smaller cabinets under them. There are molly bolts in the wall, which Don says he can deal with (thank goodness) from those. This will get us closer to finishing the bathrooms. That's the plan. More later ... I'll take photos after it's done, I don't see any reason to take photos before ...

During ...
So, Don showed up with tons of tools, and started looking at things. I had moved out the items on the counters, in the cabinets, etc. And its fun to hear a pro talk about it. "That'll be easy, we'll need to do this, need to scrape the paint down to the base here ..." ... he's cool about doing the work and calling out if he needs help. I have lunch stuff downstairs too, so in a couple hours, I'll take care of that.

He will back tomorrow to finish ... but he's optimistic he'll have everything done (or at least most) tomorrow.

Sunday, May 15
Today Don showed up with his wife BJ. They did the last "third" of the bathroom(s). They did some touch-up. And we finished the cabinet for the "closet". The trim (and doors) and the big cabinet in the main "shower" room will need painting still (white). The green is all done-done for the moment. In a bit over a week, Carolyn has some time off work, and during that time, she and Don are going to get light fixtures to replace the ones we have now (not very good, old, and the "covers" are broken on both of them ...), and they will work on the rest of the painting. So there will be a bit more work to do ... oh, and Don will bring a stud-finder so we can put a screw through the cabinet over the toilet into the wall, so that it doesn't fall over during an earthquake ...

Thursday, May 26
Carolyn was off work all week, so Thursday, Don came over and the two of them went light fixture shopping. We have new fixtures. Not much else got done, except that Don did bring the stud finder and dealt with the cabinet. More painting yet to do ... more photos at that time.
