A Mirror into Ken's Past -- 1993

Winter/Spring
When Spring came around we started thinking about Disneyland. We drove down with Don and BJ this year -- it was a riot. We had a great ride down, Disneyland itself was hysterical like usual. Saturday evening in the park, after dinner, while we were waiting for the "Fantasmic" show to start, Carolyn asked me to marry her. I had been avoiding the "M" word because she had been, until this point, adamantly against marriage. When she went to a wedding she always wore black! I was shocked. I was stunned. I told her something like "Let me think about it." She was a bit hurt that I didn't jump up and down and say "Yes" right there, but shock can cause you to do or say some stupid things. She let it go, and we enjoyed the rest of the trip, but I think she was a bit unhappy for awhile.

We were still living in the house in El Cerrito (we lived there for some time), the Golden Stag Players were a going concern, the herald's office was still running out of our house, I was still providing tech support for TeamB, still working for the US Government via SofTech (I think -- somewhere in here it became Tresp -- same job, different company, more pay). I was still making jewelry for Queen's Cyphers sometimes, and an occaisional other piece of jewelry for someone, but not as much of it.

In otherwords, I was busy, but generally pretty happy.

I ended up going to the Borland Conference in May, and presenting a couple of papers on dBASE IV, version 2.0. That was a real fun trip. Speaking before other folk who used dBASE professionally was a bit nerve-wracking the first time out, but it went pretty well. I met some of the newest TeamB/dBASE members (including Keith Chuvala, who was hysterical and pretty cool), and just having a ball. Borland footed the bill for speakers, which included airfare, hotels, conference fees, food, etc.

Summer
It really took me a couple of months after Carolyn blind-sided me with the proposal of marriage for me to decide that I really ought to accept. I bought a card with a lioness grooming another lion on it, and no text inside, and a single rose. I wrote "Yes, I will marry you!" inside the card. That was all I wrote. I put them on the dining room table for her when she came home from work that day. All I can say is that it made her VERY happy!

SCA
Not a lot happened that summer except that I got an invitation to come to Australia (!) to visit the folk there for an heraldic collegium that the Principality officer was holding. They would pay part of my way, the Kingdom would pay part of my way, and I paid the rest. Unfortunately the fund-raising for my getting there from the folk in Australia didn't net a lot of money, so rather than paying 1/3 of the cost of the trip, I paid over half.

I also had to plan for the annual TeamB gathering. My vacation time was shot, but what the heck?

Fall

SCA
I went to Australia in October. It was a good trip. I met Bruce Probst and his girlfriend Tia, and several other folk in the herald's office there. A few years later when Bruce and Tia broke up, he dropped out of the SCA completely (for political reasons), released his awards, his name, his coat of arms ... It was too bad. Tia "got the SCA", and he just kept in touch with friends. He had a VCR that could read US format tapes, so I was taping things like Babylon 5 (best Science Fiction TV series to date), and sending them to him. He would send "biscuits" (Cookies) from the Arnott Bakeries in Australia. Good stuff. He's since started to come back to the SCA, but it took him several years.

I got to do a small amount of site-seeing while there, but not a lot. I never got to see a koala or a wombat while I was there. I did see kangaroos and emus and all kinds of other wildlife.

The folk I stayed with in Sydney were Ray and Marit (in the SCA: Raymond of Annan and Marit the Wanderer), and their children. Peter Volk (in the SCA: Peter the Undecided) was around during the site-seeing, and we talked SCA, as well as just being touristy.

The other trip was the TeamB gathering in Scotts Valley. This year was the year that the new Borland Building was open for business. Our TeamB contact person got us lost in the building a couple of times, which was amusing.

I can't remember anything truly exciting or interesting for the rest of the year. We went to Carolyn's mom and stepfather's place for Christmas in Sacramento ... that's about it.
